The Space I Was Always Born To Design

A POEM FOR MY PEOPLE · ORION WILDE

I don’t need them to know me to know myself
I don’t need them to love me to love myself
I deserve to build a life that resonates with me
I don’t have to shrink to fit
There’s enough space in this universe for all of us
I’m allowed to create, dream, and live out loud
Their opinions don’t define me
What’s meant for me will always find me
I don’t have to fold myself small to fit inside their walls
In the wreckage there will be transformation
Let it hurt, gotta feel it to heal it
The feeling is the hardest part
I did a lot of numbing before I allowed my body to feel the cruelty behind the lies they spread
There were times I wished myself dead
But now I see their small vision was never meant for me
I think the universe always knew I was meant to live and create something true
Even if all of the creation only exists for me
Finally my spirit is free
My car has become my studio
The dreams inside my head have finally become my home
I trust myself now and I’m never alone
Regardless of the harsh realities this world has shown
Especially my family who tried to claim me as their own
I was never meant to live inside their truth
Mine was always meant to bleed through
I stood for years with my heart in my hand
Hoping one day they would finally understand
But my spirit was dying slow waiting for their permission to grow
So I finally accepted the truth
I was never going to fit into their view
So I released them and wished them well
Now I have a story to tell
I’m so afraid of my own essence because I was trained that it wasn’t a blessing
That underneath the conditioned beliefs was just a little girl that didn’t deserve to be seen
I’m trying to unlearn that now but some days it still creeps in somehow
I think I only deserve the worst that I came in defective from birth
But I’m learning that’s not true and in the reckoning trying to make something better
For every souls that I encounter
This is a big one but it’s been on my heart
I was always meant for greatness even from the start
I just didn’t know then my essence was pure
I learned limited dogma and what makes a pious person great
Turns out I would never fit that mold
I tried to contort myself to their shape to keep a smile on everyone’s face
I was slowly dying inside; all of the false teaching left no place for me to hide
Now here I am on a beautiful Sunday trying to create a world for people like me
To lay down their burdens and finally be free
To know that the essence they were born with was fine
Before the world tried to steal their shine
So take my hand let’s enjoy this life and remember the small child inside
